HILLSONGS 2009 with Richard Gill

The DRMC was proud to have Richard Gill as the Music Director for the 2009 Children's Choral Festival.

Richard Gill is currently the Music Director of the Victorian Opera and is internationally respected as a music educator, specialising in opera, musical theatre, vocal and choral training. Richard's work in developing young musicians and creating opportunities for them is recognized world-wide. He expects this project will link into his Introduction to Opera programs and open the doors to a wider appreciation of music and the opportunity to become actively involved in music making. He is keen to demonstrate to children that creating music is possible and enjoyable, and that their own music can be presented to an audience at a grand concert. This project was funded by the Australia Council for the Arts.

Ten schools took part in the 2009 Childrens Choral Festival.  Students workshopped with Richard developing new work with a bushfire recovery theme. Students from each school also rehearsed a song of their choice to perform at the concert. Teachers also had the opportunity to take part in professional development workshops with Richard, strengthening music programs throughout our local schools.

The Concert held in November, was enjoyed by all, as students gave their best. Performed at the George Wood Performing Arts Centre, choirs were also seated in the auditorium when not on stage, to enjoy watching and listening to other choirs.
