Music for Artists with Disabilities

Co-ordinator - Deirdre Murdoch

There are four members of this team, currently offering weekly workshops to the Melba Community Residential Units: De Felice, Blue Ridge and Pisces, where the clients are severely disabled.

Joan plays her accordion, and Sam Derrick, our blind pianist, who also accompanies the Happy Wanderers, alternates between keyboard and guitar, sings all songs with gusto.

Pat and Deirdre are the other members who sing along and encourage the clients to participate as best they can. We all socialise with the clients, the staff, the visitors, the parents and all sing along together, particularly when we know the songs Sam chooses. Sam often chooses more modern songs that are age appropriate for the clients. A staff member of the three houses brings the clients to wherever we are each Tuesday night, in their bus. It is a night we all look forward to. New team members would always be welcome to participate in hands-on music with these special people.
