The clarinet section of the DRMC New Horizons Concert Band welcomed Kim Benke from London, Ontario, Canada to rehearsal on 25th Feb. Kim said,"There are four New Horizon Concert bands in London who perform regularly in the community and she says it was a nice surprise to be loaned a clarinet to have a 'BLOW DOWN UNDER'. Kim's husband Otto Benke was on a school exchange program in 1997 with Jurgen and Sonny Weller from the Patch and along with Murray and Bev McAlister have spent a great week catching up with stories of snow, ice and music making. The New Horizons Band program is very well established in USA and Canada and the Dandenong Ranges Band is the only one in Victoria. It caters for adult beginners and lapsed musicians over 50 who wish to learn a brass, woodwind or percussion instrument and play in an ensemble. Under the musical direction of Brian Hogg and Kate McAlister the band meets every Thursday morning at the Community Music Centre at Upwey High School and is a great example of life long learning and fun in community music. To join the band call DRMC 9754 6566 or email: drmc@drmc.org.au.
