YOUTH MUSIC AWARDS 2011
Auditions for the 2011 Youth Music Awards were held on Sunday 7th November 2010 for both the Bill Borthwick Young Musicians Encouragement Prize and the Ann and Chris Krans Music Award at the DRMC Community Music Centre. Five entrants competed for the Borthwick and two entrants for the Krans award.

Bill Borthwick Young Musicians Encouragement Prize:
Equal 1st – Rory Say (Classical Guitar) $225.00
Equal 1st – Isabelle Burns (violin) $225.00
Honourable Mention – Sadie Mustoe (violin) $50.00
The Ann and Chris Krans Music Award Prize:
Equal 1st – William Soo (piano) $250.00
Equal 1st – Brandon Li Wan Po (Bass Guitar) $250.00

The presentation ceremony was held on Sunday 3 April as part of the DRMC’s Youth Week Event in the Performance Space, Upwey High School at 2.00pm Youth Music Award winners, applicants and UHS scholarship winners performed to an appreciative audience. Other performers at the afternoon concert included DRMC instrumental teacher: Jenny Royle with her piano students performing their own compositions about space and the Ranges Young Strings conducted by Steve Burns.

Ranges Young Strings: Little Verbunkos Dance by Kokai Reszko
Jenny Royle’s students: Kyeema Kennedy, Madeleine Ostoja-Solecki, Samantha Smith, Magnus Bock, Ainsley Kennedy, Zeke Ashby, Thomas Royle, Evette Albert and Rebecca Dingjan – own compositions about space.

William Soo (Krans Equal 1st Prize – Piano): Etude Opus 10 No. 1 + 12 by Chopin
The performance was followed by the presentation of the Borthwick Prizes by Upwey Community Bank Manager, Luan Hanlen and the Krans Prizes by DRMC Chair, Norma Durrand. The concert was MCd by DRMC CEO, Sue Arney. Approximately 80 people attended the concert and ticket sales were $208 @ $5 Adult and $2 Student/Concession. The DRMC Board provided a delicious afternoon tea with scones and jam and all considered it to be a successful afternoon.
